How to Choose a Power Adaptor (After Your own Research)

  • CAUTION: You must have the correct tip configuration/dimensions AND the correct polarity
  • SEEK EXPERT ADVICE!

  • REGARDING VOLTS AMPS and WATTS:

1. Check the Original Charger:
The easiest way to find the correct specifications is to look at the label on your original laptop charger. It will usually list the output voltage (in volts, V) and amperage (in amps, A). Multiply these two values to get the wattage (in watts, W).
2. Match the Voltage:
The voltage on the new charger must match the voltage listed on your original charger, or be within a 1V difference of it. If the voltage is too high or too low, you risk damaging your laptop.
3. Higher Wattage is Okay:
You can use a charger with a higher wattage than your original charger, but never a lower wattage. A higher wattage charger will allow your laptop to charge faster, but the laptop will only draw the power it needs, so it won't damage your laptop.
4. Where to Find Information:
If you don't have your original charger or the label is damaged, check your laptop's manual or the manufacturer's website for the correct voltage and wattage specifications.
5. Example:
If your original charger states 19V and 3.42A, then the wattage is 19V * 3.42A = 65W. You could use a charger that is 19V and 4.0A (76W), but not 19V and 2.0A (38W).
